Aqara U400 vs. Schlage Sense Pro: Which Is Better?

The Aqara U400 and Schlage Sense Pro are built around the same headline feature: walk toward the door with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and the lock can open without being touched.

From there, they are surprisingly different.

The Aqara U400 is the more flexible lock. It has a fingerprint reader, touchscreen keypad, Apple Home Key, Samsung Wallet support, NFC, a rekeyable physical key and USB-C emergency power. Aqara currently lists it at $269.99.

The Schlage Sense Pro costs $399. It skips the fingerprint reader and physical key but gives you built-in Wi-Fi, remote management through the Schlage Home app and a much smaller exterior housing. Schlage also backs it with a longer warranty.

For most buyers comparing these two specifically for hands-free entry, the Aqara U400 makes the stronger value case.

Sense Pro makes more sense if you want the simplest path to remote access, prefer Schlage hardware or don't want your lock depending on a separate smart-home controller for connected features.

If hands-free unlocking isn't something you care about, neither lock needs to be at the top of your shopping list. You're paying a premium for technology that matters most when you actually intend to use it.

Both locks use Ultra Wideband, or UWB, to make hands-free entry possible.

UWB can determine distance and direction much more precisely than basic Bluetooth proximity. In this case, the goal is to recognize that an authorized phone or watch is actually approaching the door rather than simply sitting somewhere nearby.

With compatible Apple hardware, both locks support hands-free Home Key.

You approach the door with the iPhone in a pocket or bag, or an Apple Watch on your wrist, and the lock can unlock without requiring a tap.

We have not tested the U400 and Sense Pro head to head, so we're not going to tell you one unlocks faster or more reliably.

The device requirements are also similar. Current hands-free support requires newer iPhones and Apple Watches, plus a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. Both manufacturers list iPhone 11 and newer with certain models excluded, and Apple Watch Series 6 and newer with the Apple Watch SE excluded.

That hub requirement matters.

If you don't already have a compatible HomePod or Apple TV, the real cost of hands-free Home Key is higher than the price of the lock.

This is the U400's biggest advantage.

Hands-free entry is only one option.

The U400 also gives you:

Aqara stores up to 50 fingerprints, and its physical key cylinder can be rekeyed.

Fingerprint access is the feature we'd care about most.

It gives everyone in the household a fast way inside without requiring the right phone, watch or smart-home setup. Kids don't need phones. A relative doesn't need to understand Home Key. Someone can simply use a finger.

Sense Pro doesn't offer that option.

The mechanical key is another meaningful difference. Aqara gives you a conventional fallback in addition to USB-C emergency power.

For a lock that is otherwise packed with new technology, having an old-fashioned key available isn't a bad thing.

Sense Pro has Wi-Fi built into the lock.

Once connected to the Schlage Home app and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, you can manage the lock remotely without adding a separate Schlage bridge or hub. That includes remote locking and unlocking, code management, history and notifications.

The U400 is built more heavily around Bluetooth and Matter over Thread.

For a Matter ecosystem, Aqara requires a compatible Thread-enabled Matter controller. That could be an Apple Home hub, SmartThings setup or another supported Matter controller depending on the platform you're using.

If you already have that infrastructure, it's hardly a disadvantage.

If you don't, Schlage is simpler.

Install the lock, connect it to Wi-Fi and use the Schlage Home app.

That simplicity is probably the strongest practical reason to spend more on Sense Pro.

It's also useful in a mixed Apple and Android household. Schlage's own app provides remote management on both platforms rather than making Apple Home the center of the setup.

The U400 has a rekeyable mechanical cylinder.

The Sense Pro has no keyway at all.

Schlage's logic is straightforward: without a cylinder, there's nothing to pick or bump.

If the Sense Pro's AA batteries are completely depleted, an exterior USB-C port can temporarily power the lock so you can enter electronically.

The U400 gives you both approaches. There's a mechanical key, plus USB-C emergency power if the rechargeable battery runs out.

I wouldn't call either design inherently better.

If you like having a completely mechanical way through the door, Aqara wins.

If you'd rather eliminate the key cylinder altogether, Sense Pro does exactly that.

It's worth deciding how you feel about this before buying because it's not something you can change later.

The U400 uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Aqara rates it for up to six months per charge and lets you recharge through USB-C.

Sense Pro uses four AA alkaline batteries, with Schlage also estimating up to six months under typical use.

This comes down to maintenance preference more than performance.

Aqara means fewer disposable batteries, but charging becomes part of owning the lock.

Schlage means keeping AAs around the house and swapping them when needed.

I wouldn't choose between the two based on the six-month estimates. Those are manufacturer figures, not a promise of what either lock will deliver on your door.

This is easy to miss when you're looking at product photos on a screen.

The U400's exterior housing measures about 6.6 inches tall and 3 inches wide.

Sense Pro is roughly 4 inches tall and 2.75 inches wide.

That's not a small difference.

Aqara needs room for its touchscreen, fingerprint reader and mechanical-key hardware. The result looks more obviously like a piece of smart-home technology.

Sense Pro is more restrained and closer in scale to a conventional deadbolt.

If your front-door hardware is part of the look of the house, take a minute to compare the actual dimensions before ordering.

Both are designed around standard North American deadbolt installations, but the fit requirements aren't identical. Sense Pro supports standard 1 3/8 to 1 3/4-inch doors and common 2 3/8 or 2 3/4-inch backsets. Aqara specifies single-cylinder deadbolt compatibility and notes that some doors may require modification.

Schlage publishes detailed grading for Sense Pro.

It carries a BHMA BAA residential rating and ANSI/BHMA Commercial Grade 2.

Aqara says the U400 is BHMA certified, but its current product documentation does not publish a comparable letter grade.

That's as far as we'd take the comparison.

It would be misleading to invent an Aqara grade or imply Schlage automatically wins because it publishes more detail.

There are also design differences that don't fit neatly into one certification number.

Sense Pro eliminates the key cylinder and includes a built-in forced-entry alarm. The U400 retains a rekeyable cylinder, stores fingerprint credentials locally and offers features such as anti-peep PIN entry and Night Latch Mode.

More entry methods don't automatically mean less security. They mean you have more credentials to manage.

Aqara publishes an IP65 rating for the U400's exterior panel, which covers protection against dust and water exposure such as rain.

Schlage doesn't publish an IP rating for Sense Pro, but it rates the exterior hardware to operate from approximately -31°F to 151°F.

Those are different specifications, so we wouldn't use them to manufacture a weather winner.

The warranty comparison is clearer.

Aqara's U.S. warranty policy currently gives smart door locks 12 months of coverage. Schlage covers Sense Pro with a limited lifetime mechanical and finish warranty plus three years on electronics.

That's a legitimate advantage for Schlage, especially on a $399 lock that's expected to spend years exposed to daily use and weather.

Neither would be our first choice for a dedicated short-term rental.

Airbnb's current native smart-lock compatibility list includes the Schlage Encode family, along with selected Yale and August models. It does not currently list Sense Pro or the Aqara U400.

More importantly, an Airbnb guest isn't getting much value from UWB hands-free entry. A reliable keypad and automated reservation codes are more useful.

For a rental-first property, we'd spend less and buy for rental management rather than for the newest way to open the owner's front door.

The Aqara U400 is our pick for most buyers choosing between these two.

You're getting hands-free Apple Home Key, fingerprint access, a mechanical backup key, Matter over Thread and a rechargeable battery for considerably less than the Sense Pro.

That combination is hard to beat if you already have the smart-home hardware needed to support it.

Choose the Schlage Sense Pro if built-in Wi-Fi and simple remote management matter more to you. Its smaller exterior, longer warranty and Schlage's lock-hardware background also give it an appeal that doesn't show up in a feature-count contest.

At current manufacturer pricing, the gap is about $129.

For us, Aqara offers enough additional flexibility to justify choosing it unless one of Schlage's specific advantages is important to you.

If your main priorities are hands-free Home Key, fingerprint access and overall value, the U400 is harder to beat.

We reviewed current manufacturer specifications, connectivity requirements, supported entry methods, Apple device requirements, published security certifications, dimensions, battery systems, warranty coverage and pricing.

We did not personally test the locks, so hands-free speed and real-world reliability were not used to declare a winner.

The U400 gives you more ways through the door for less money.

Sense Pro gives you a cleaner connectivity story and a more traditional lock package.

That's the choice.
