Schlage Arrive vs. Encode Plus: Is Apple Home Key Worth $130 More?

The Schlage Arrive and Encode Plus share more than their prices suggest. Both have built-in Wi-Fi, remote control through the Schlage Home app, keypad entry, a physical backup key and support for Alexa, Google Home and Ring. Neither requires a separate bridge for remote access.

The real question is what another $130 buys.

Schlage lists the Arrive at $199 and the Encode Plus at $329. The Encode Plus earns that premium with Apple Home and Apple Home Key, a touchscreen keypad, a built-in alarm and direct Airbnb integration. Those are meaningful upgrades for the right buyer, but they do not make it $130 better at the basics.

For most homeowners, the Arrive is the better value. It handles remote access, scheduled codes and everyday keypad entry for substantially less money. We would pay more for the Encode Plus if Apple Home Key will be used regularly or if the lock is going on an Airbnb.

Apple Home Key is the clearest reason to choose the Encode Plus.

After the lock is added to Apple Home, an authorized iPhone or Apple Watch can be tapped against the Encode Plus to lock or unlock the door. It works more like a digital hotel key or contactless payment than a typical smart-lock app. There is no need to open the Schlage app or enter a keypad code.

That convenience can add up when the same people use the same door every day. Someone already wearing an Apple Watch may find a quick tap easier than typing a code, especially at night or while carrying bags.

Home Key is not hands-free unlocking, however. The iPhone or Apple Watch still has to be brought close enough to tap the lock. The premium makes sense if Home Key is the feature that changes how the household enters the home. It is much harder to justify if everyone will continue using keypad codes, the Schlage Home app or a physical key. In that case, the Arrive covers the same fundamental job for $130 less.

The Arrive is not merely a stripped-down lock. It keeps most of the functionality that makes a connected deadbolt useful.

Built-in Wi-Fi allows remote locking, unlocking and status checks through the Schlage Home app without a separate bridge. Owners can create and schedule access codes, view activity and manage more than one lock from the app. It also retains a physical key cylinder for backup access.

The Arrive supports up to 250 access codes, compared with up to 100 for the Encode Plus. Most homeowners will never approach either limit, but the larger capacity can matter for landlords, property managers or homes with frequent service access.

Its push-button keypad is also a legitimate preference, not just a cost-saving compromise. The physical buttons provide tactile feedback and can be easier to operate with gloves or without looking closely at the keypad. The Encode Plus touchscreen looks more polished, but polished is not automatically more practical.

The buyer is not paying $130 more for substantially better basic smart-lock functionality. The premium primarily buys different access methods and integrations.

The Encode Plus works with Apple Home and allows compatible iPhone and Apple Watch users to tap the lock with Home Key. This is the upgrade most likely to change the daily experience of using the door.

Apple households also gain control through the Apple Home app and Siri. Remote Apple Home control and automations require an appropriate Apple home hub, but the Encode Plus can still use its own built-in Wi-Fi and the Schlage Home app without one.

The Encode Plus replaces the Arrive’s physical buttons with a fingerprint-resistant touchscreen. It has a cleaner appearance and may fit a more modern front door better.

It also includes a built-in alarm designed to detect potential forced-entry attempts. That does not replace a complete home-security system, but it gives the Encode Plus a security feature the Arrive does not have.

Neither difference alone makes the Encode Plus an automatic buy. Together with Home Key, though, they make it feel like the more premium lock.

The Encode Plus is part of Schlage’s Encode family and supports direct Airbnb integration. The connection can generate a unique guest code for a reservation, share it with the guest, activate it for the stay and deactivate it after checkout.

The Arrive can still create temporary and scheduled codes through the Schlage Home app. The owner must manage that process rather than tying it directly to Airbnb reservations. That is acceptable for occasional guests or a long-term rental, but it adds repetitive work for an active short-term rental.

The Encode Plus also has the broader smart-home package. Both locks support Alexa, Google Home and Ring, but the Encode Plus adds Apple Home and Home Key along with Airbnb support.

For an Airbnb or vacation rental, we would spend more for the Encode Plus.

Both locks can provide guests with temporary keypad access. The difference is how much work happens behind the scenes. Direct Airbnb integration makes the Encode Plus better suited to frequent turnover because guest codes can follow the reservation instead of being created and removed manually.

That automation will not matter much on a long-term rental, where codes change infrequently. For a busy short-term rental, it is a more persuasive reason to pay the premium than Home Key or the touchscreen.
